When will I get started?
You will receive a welcome email the day after you sign up for the journey. The first “real” email will show up the next day and then you will receive a new email every seven days after that. So, there is a welcome email, ten “action step” emails, and then I will end with a closing email. Oh, and I will probably send out one last email six months later to make sure you have continued on the journey!
Can this program help with any language?
Yes. The Ten Week Journey is not about teaching a particular language, but rather it is about giving you the tools, skills and understanding to learn any language yourself using any and all available resources. The journey is not so much about teaching a language as it is about teaching you how to learn any language.
Does it matter what level I am at now?
The program was written mostly with the beginning language learner in mind. I know so many people who would love to learn another language, but don’t know where to start. That said, many who are already intermediate speakers of the language don’t know what to do to continue. Much of the program is about attitudes, habits, motivation, and the know how to help learners become fluent on their own. So while the Ten Week Journey may not be completely beneficial for the advanced speaker, it has a lot of great ideas and thoughts to offer language learners of every level.
Will I be fluent at the end of the Ten Week Journey?
Absolutely not. This program was not developed for the super motivated, highly driven language learner who wants to pour himself or herself into learning the language as fast as possible. If you have the time, energy and drive to put hours and hours of each day toward language learning, this may not be the program for you. But there are some other great sites out there that will help you if that is your desire. Though no one promises fluency in ten weeks, there are a few who get close in three months.
So where will I be at the end of ten weeks?
My goal for you at the end of this ten week journey is that you will:
- Have a firm foundation in the language that is allowing you to begin to communicate with native speakers.
- Have the tools and understand of how to continue – on your own – to steadily improve your command of the language.
- Have a love for the culture, people and the language and that this emotional connection will motivate you to continue to learn.
- Have developed language learning habits that will continue to carry you forward even when the motivation begins to wain.
- Have developed the mindset of a self directed language learner.
Do I have to be “technically savvy” to make this work?
No, you do not have to be a programmer from Apple. Can you use a computer and the internet for normal things like email, surfing the web and watching YouTube videos? If so, you’ve got what it takes. I have worked hard to make this journey one in which the everyday language learner can find success. If you do have questions, first check back here at the Ten Week Journey FAQ page. If your answer is not there, send me an email and I will see how I can help.
What if I start and then want to quit?
You have all heard the Vince Lombardi quote, “Winners never quit and quitters never win.” Well hogwash. Seth Godin says that actually winners quit all the time. The challenge is knowing when to quit. Week nine of this journey is not the time to quit. By then you will have invested a lot of time and energy. Get through a week or two – and if it’s not working out – quit then. Just hit the unsubscribe button at the bottom of the screen. I won’t be mad. I may even be proud of you! If you are choosing something better, something more meaningful to put your time toward, then more power to you. If you are quitting so you can watch Lost reruns, well that’s another story all together.
Should I sign up for the mailing list too?
The Ten Week Journey and The Everyday Language Learner mailing list are separate lists. If you haven’t signed up for my mailing list, I would consider waiting until the end of the ten weeks. Too much in the inbox won’t help you. When it’s all said and done though you will definitely want to sign up for the mailing list. Signing up for the mailing list is an important step in maintaining motivation and continuing to develop the skills to succeed as a language learner. You can find out more about the mailing list HERE.
Why did you make The Ten Week Journey?
I think the main motivation were the folks back in rural Freeman, South Dakota. There is a growing population of Spanish speakers in the area and many in the community who want to be able to communicate with them. But farmers learning Spanish? They sort of define the everyday language learner in my mind. And I believe they can, given the right support, learn Spanish. And that goes for everyone who wants to learn another language.
It would be disingenuous not to mention that I also desire to create an online presence that will allow me to grow my coaching cliental and blog readership so that I can make a living doing this. So, if you want, you can also purchase one of my e-book products or check into language coaching. The Ten Week Journey and the majority of the stuff at this site are free though.
